Cycle Rally to promote healthy heart

NEW YEAR CYCLE RALLY

School of Public Health, Post graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh in Collaboration with State NCD control Program (CHHAP) and Chandigarh Amateur Cycling Association, Chandigarh organized New Year Cycle Rally on Sunday 25^th Jan 2009 from PGIMER (Chuttani Block-B to Sukhna Lake) for promoting physical activity in Chandigarh which was attended by 90 persons.

The Cycle Rally was Flagged Off by S.K.Sharma, President, Environment Society of India. On this occasion participating industries from the project ‘‘Developing a Model for the Prevention of Non Communicable Diseases in an Industrial setting’’ along with Government High School, Sector 12, PGIMER and Nursing College, PGIMER actively participated in this event.

The cycle rally was followed by spectacular presentation from S.K. Sharma on how to maintain a healthy environment in Chandigarh, Dr JS Thakur, Associate Professor, School of Public health, Department of Community Medicine spoke on Lifestyle Diseases and importance of Physical Activity, Rakesh Mohindra, Secretary Chandigarh, Amateur Cycling Association spoke on Importance and benefits of cycling, Dr Puneet Bains, Project Officer, School of Public Health, PGIMER spoke on the importance of healthy workplace environment in Industrial setting, Dr Parveen, MPH student,PGIMER spoke on risk factors of non communicable diseases.

Refreshments were sponsored by Talwar Dairy and Healthy workplace project staff. It is worth while to mention here that every fourth Sunday cycle rally would be organized by all these partners to promote physical activity in Chandigarh.

Railways and Punjab wins in Boys Section

Railways and Kerala lifted the men's and women's team trophies, respectively, in the National Track Cycling Championships, conducted by the Chandigarh Amateur Cycling Association at the Punjabi University Velodrome in Patialatoday. Punjab were runners-up in the men's section and Manipur women secured runners-up in the women's category.
Punjab claimed the junior boys section while Kerala were runners-up. Kerala claimed the junior girls championship pushing Manipur to the runners-up position. Gurshardeep Singh of Services Sports Control Board won the gurelling 20 km Point Race for men. Harpreet Singh of Railway Sports Promotion Board and Atul Kumar of Services Sports Control Board bagged silver and bronze medals, respectively. Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal gave away the prizes. Manpreet Badal promised financial assistance to Punjabi University and Punjab Cycling Association for development of sports. He also promised to grant financial assistance for developing sports culture in Punjab if a long term plan will be submitted. He also took details for preparing the Punjab teams for forthcoming National Games to be held at Jharkhand. The inclement weather delayed today's schedule. Manpreet Badal interacted with the cyclists to know how they felt about the university infrastructure.
Prof Jaspal Singh Vice Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala also wintessed the Cycling Competitions.
Karamvir Singh Sidhu, Secretary General, highlighted the activities of the Cycling Federation of India and also gave details about the preparation of Commonwealth Games. Organising Secretary Rakesh Mohindra read out the report of the championships. Hardeep Singh Kingra, Treasurer,CFI gave vote of thanks.

National Track Cycling 2009, Patiala

Patiala, January 25, 2009

Sh. Parminder Singh Dhindsa, Cabinet Minister-PWD (B&R), Government of Punjab inaugurated the 62nd Senior, 39th Junior, 25th Sub-Junior National Track Cycling Championships on 13^th January 2009, Professor Jaspal Singh, Vice Chancellor Punjabi University, Patiala presided over the inauguration function. A Large number of VIP’s and University officials witnessed the opening ceremony parade of participating teams and cycling events in the morning session. Sh. Parminder Singh Dhindsa expressed his good wishes to participants and also announced a financial assistance of Rs. One lakh for the organisation of the Championships and promised all support for warm hospitality to the participants.

Sh. Manpreet Singh Badal, cabinet Minster-Finance and Planning & Program gave away the prizes to winners on the closing ceremony. Mr. Badal interacted with the winners and players from different states and congratulated them on their success and applauded the efforts of organising committee for conducting the Championships in a befitting manner. Sh. Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Member of Parliament &Former Cabinet Minister and President of Cycling Federation of India also presided during the Championships and personally ask for making better training facilities for budding cyclists.
